Where he could le and, gazing down at the sea,
Recognize his unique and solitary home.
I believe he is referring to the poetry he wrote. He can re-read it and recognizes it as a solitary home. His poetry is a place where he can record all of his thoughts, and later reflect upon. This poem is very descriptive, but i like these lines most of all because they sum up the whole message in a way.

Kirk,
Your theory that the poetry is his "unique and solitary home" is a statement that I agree with very much. Is it possible for someone to live in literature? Or by writing do we carve, so to speak, a place for us to exist?
So many interesting questions! Keep up the good work.
